FAQ

What Are EarPlanes?

EarPlanes are patented pressure-regulating earplugs inserted into the ear to help reduce discomfort commonly associated with air travel. They were developed by Cirrus Healthcare Products LLC in conjunction with the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles and have been tested by US Navy aviators at the Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego.

How Do EarPlanes Work?

EarPlanes consist of two elements:

  • A hypoallergenic silicone earplug
  • A ceramic pressure regulator

The silicone earplug forms an airtight seal inside the ear canal using four circumferential rings. The ceramic filter is a controlled-porosity element that regulates airflow between changing cabin pressure and the sealed ear canal.

As cabin pressure changes during flight, air moves gradually through the ceramic filter, helping to slow pressure changes inside the ear. This reduces the pressure difference across the eardrum, allowing the Eustachian tubes to function more normally and reducing discomfort, particularly during descent. EarPlanes are especially helpful for people experiencing blocked Eustachian tubes due to colds, allergies, or sinus congestion.

Who Should Use EarPlanes?

EarPlanes are intended for:

  • People with sensitive ears
  • People flying with a cold
  • Allergy sufferers
  • People with sinus conditions

A children's version is available for ages 1–11 years.

Are There Any Other Benefits To EarPlanes?

Yes.

EarPlanes also function as noise-suppression earplugs. Many users report that they reduce much of the high-frequency noise produced by aircraft engines while still allowing important airline safety announcements to be heard and enabling the use of headphones.

Why Are EarPlanes Disposable?

During use, air passes through microscopic pores in the ceramic filter.

Over time, particles such as:

  • smoke
  • pollen
  • airborne bacteria
  • earwax

can clog the filter, reducing its effectiveness.

Where Can I Find EarPlanes?
